Reasons for the persistence of cigarette smell
The smell of tobacco is very corrosive and permeates almost everything: hair, hands, skin, clothes. It's all about the chemical composition of the smoke exhaled by the smoker. In addition to nicotine, carbon monoxide and other volatile impurities, cigarettes contain a certain amount of viscous tar, which, when released into the air, settles on surrounding surfaces. Their noticeable traces remain on the smoker’s teeth.
Resins are less volatile than other smoke components. When they settle, due to their viscosity, particles of dust and particulate matter in the air literally stick to them. They are the cause of the pungent aroma, which is not at all easy to get rid of. In addition, the resins in exhaled smoke dry out the mucous membranes. This contributes to the appearance and rapid proliferation of pathogenic microflora in the mouth, or, more simply put, harmful bacteria, which is also the cause of a persistent odor.
Interestingly, cigarette smoke is 4 times more saturated with harmful substances than the exhaust gases of an average car, and 1 mm3 of exhaled tobacco smoke contains up to three million soot particles.
Luckily, there are many ways to mask the odor or eliminate it completely.
How long does it take for the smell of cigarettes to disappear from your mouth?
On average, with heavy smoking, the smell of cigarettes weakens after 2-3 hours. It weakens, and does not disappear - the completely pungent aroma will not go away on its own. Microscopic particles of tobacco and various tars remain on the oral mucosa for 25 to 50 hours, as a result of which the unpleasant odor, one way or another, persists. For most people, it will not be as irritating as immediately after taking a puff, however, for asthmatics, even the remnants of the tobacco smell can cause severe discomfort.
Strong-smelling foods can overpower the strong aroma of cigarettes, however, not all foods are suitable for this purpose. Dishes with garlic, for example, will only worsen the situation, however, aromatic teas, fermented milk products and spices can mask the pungent odor for some time.
Ways to remove tobacco odor from hands
Eliminating the smell of tobacco from the skin of your hands is no less important than eliminating the smell of cigarettes from your mouth.
Hand wash products
Of course, first of all, a smoker should pay attention to hygiene. Frequent and thorough hand washing with clean water and scented detergents will help cope with the problem. It should be borne in mind that cold water removes odor from the skin more effectively.
Small brushes or sponges specifically designed for hand washing will also help eliminate odors. Don't forget to moisturize your skin after washing with cream.
Wet wipes and antiseptics
If it is not possible to wash your hands with water, wet wipes will come to the rescue. You will have to choose them by trial and error, because some napkin scents do not eliminate the tobacco smell, but mix with it and give an even more unpleasant effect. Compact antiseptic gels should also be in the arsenal of every smoker, but, being one of the most effective products, they have a significant drawback: they dry out the skin greatly.
Natural remedies
To combat the smell of tobacco on your hands, well-known natural flavorings can be used: coffee grounds, citrus zest, mint leaves, basil or lavender. Almost all of them contain persistent pigments that can stain the skin, so they should only be used at home.
Technical indoor air purification
There are a number of devices whose functions include cleaning the air from unpleasant odors.
Ionizer
The device makes the molecules of foreign substances heavy, which causes them to settle on surfaces. A person does not inhale them, and therefore does not smell them. The ionizer quickly eliminates any odors that are harmful to the respiratory system.
Air conditioner
Modern models have an air purification function, which solves the problem with odors.
Humidifier
Increases moisture concentration, and when using special flavors, masks any stench. It works slowly, but completely purifies the air within a day, even without auxiliary substances.
Hood
Ventilation will forcefully remove all foreign impurities, improving the circulation of oxygen in a closed room. If you smoke near such a hood, blowing smoke in its direction, the apartment will not stink.
How to get rid of “nicotine breath”
Conventional breath fresheners will help temporarily mask the smell of tobacco from a smoker's mouth.
Chewing gum
Chewing gum promotes increased salivation, thereby moisturizing the oral mucosa and washing away solid cigarette residues. For best results, rinse your mouth with water before chewing gum. Refreshing sugar-free candies and cough drops will also help tone down the nicotine scent.
Lollipops "Antipolitsay"
According to the manufacturer, they completely eliminate the smell of tobacco, garlic and onions, rather than masking it. The effect is achieved due to the presence of biologically active absorbent substances in the composition.
Strong coffee or tea
The tart aroma of coffee and the astringent properties of strong tea will help cope with the problem. Chewing whole coffee beans also produces a noticeable effect. To eliminate bad breath, chew a coffee bean for five to ten minutes. If it is too hard, it may break into pieces.
Oral care products
If possible, thoroughly brush your teeth with regular toothpaste, paying special attention to the tongue and cheeks, since the concentration of resins is higher on the mucous membranes. By removing tobacco smoke residues from the soft tissues of the oral cavity, you will get rid of dry mouth and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. To improve the result, use dental floss: it will remove solid particles in places that are difficult to reach with a brush.
Breath freshener sprays
Only special sprays with an anti-tobacco effect give a more or less stable result, but many question their effectiveness, since the result is short-lived.
Natural remedies
As you know, the best neutralizer of bad breath is ginger. But you need to remember that this spice is very hot. If you do not have serious gastrointestinal problems, chew a small piece of ginger for two to three minutes and spit out the rest. If you need to neutralize deeper odors, swallow it.
A mint leaf, a couple of clove buds, and citrus zest will also help in the fight against cigarette breath.
Ice cream
One smoker friend shared a recipe for getting rid of the smell of tobacco from the mouth using ice cream. He claims that even a small portion of this dessert solves the problem of “tobacco breath.”
This is indeed true. Most often, ice cream is made from milk or cream, and it has long been proven that milk contains substances that neutralize chemical elements that contribute to the appearance of a bad odor.
Teeth cleaning
Thorough brushing of teeth after each smoke break protects against the smell of tobacco from the oral cavity. Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes using an appropriately sized toothbrush. Clean the spaces between teeth using dental floss - this will increase the effectiveness of the procedure.
Tobacco smoke contains more than 4 thousand toxic compounds, 70 of them provoke the development of cancer tumors even with passive smoking.
Don't forget about cleaning your tongue. Stick your tongue out as far as possible and run along the back of it with a toothbrush, a teaspoon, or a special scraper purchased at the pharmacy. Remove plaque in the direction from root to tip, treating first one half of the tongue, and then the other. After treating your tongue, use the same method to clean the inside of your cheeks.
How to remove cigarette smell from hair
Hair has a porous structure and for a long time “does not want to let go” of the odorous residues of cigarette smoke. The easiest way to eliminate tobacco aroma is to wash your hair. Unfortunately, this cannot be done often, and it is not always possible. But there are other, no less effective ways to solve the problem.
Hairdryer
You can “blow” the remaining resins from your hair with a hairdryer; this will noticeably weaken the smell, although it will not remove it completely.
Dry shampoos
According to the instructions, apply shampoo to dry hair, distribute it over the entire length and leave for five to ten minutes. The longer you wait, the more dirt the shampoo will absorb from your hair. Try to avoid getting combed particles on your clothing or skin. It is better to wrap a towel around your neck or wear an oversized T-shirt.
Aromatics
Fragrant products will help mask the tobacco smell coming from your hair: shampoos, rinses, balms, essential oils. When using the latter, drop a few drops of oil into your palm, lightly rub and distribute through your hair, then comb. It should be noted that natural undiluted oils do not leave greasy marks on the hair. Lavender is considered the best odor neutralizer, and jojoba oil also improves hair structure. However, you should not use oils often, as in concentrated form they dry out the hair and scalp.
Masks and sprays
Some of these products form a film on the hair, making it less porous and more resistant to the absorption of tar from cigarette smoke.
Apple halves

Grab some apples to freshen up your home. You know that they are not only tasty, but also absorb smell surprisingly well? They are especially effective in small rooms (for example, if someone was smoking in the toilet).
1
. Cut the apple in half or into several slices.
2
. Leave them overnight in secluded corners affected by the smell of tobacco in the premises.
Voila - not only will they remove the smell of smoke, but they will also make your room smell nice like apples! This technique also works with other foods such as pears and potatoes. It's not an exact science, but some foods, such as fruit, dairy and bread, can easily absorb odors - take note.
How to prevent cigarette smell
It is much easier to prevent the appearance of tobacco aroma than to try to eliminate it. Try to smoke in open areas or in well-ventilated areas. By acting on solid smoke particles, air flows will reduce their concentration and prevent complete settling on surrounding surfaces.
Avoid getting tobacco tar on your hands. For example, gloves will protect it from absorbing cigarette smoke. It's always a good idea to have a supply of gloves where you usually smoke.
Consuming cheese, garlic, onions, sugar or sweet drinks after smoking increases bad breath.
Even such a nuisance as tobacco smoke can be easily eliminated on your own if you follow these tips. They will help you make your life cleaner and more fragrant. Be healthy!
Baking soda
Baking soda is great for absorbing odors and drawing out excess moisture from the air. Sprinkle it on carpets, upholstered furniture or car seats. Leave it overnight or 24 hours, depending on how strong the tobacco smell is.
Vacuum the treated surfaces thoroughly. If the smell does not disappear after a day, repeat the procedure until the unpleasant smell disappears completely.
Another way to deodorize a room is to place small containers or open boxes of baking soda in problem areas to allow it to absorb the odor.
Quick Methods
Such methods of getting rid of the smell of cigarettes will be effective if the tobacco smoke is fresh and has not had time to be absorbed into surrounding objects. First you need to do a small quick test:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with baby soap. Please note that you cannot use antibacterial soap or those with strong fragrances. Wait for a few minutes until your hands stop smelling like soap.
- After this, walk around the room, running your palm over the walls, carpets, and upholstery.
- If the smell of cigarettes does not remain on your hands, then methods for quickly removing the tobacco “aroma” will work.
The following methods will help you quickly remove the smell of cigarettes:
- provide a constant flow of air in the room, or better yet, create a draft by opening windows and doors, this will help the smoke disappear faster, and the resin contained in it will not have time to settle on the surfaces of walls and furniture;
- hang wet terry towels in your apartment, which perfectly absorb any odors;
- Wash textile products (curtains, bedspreads) or hang them outdoors for a day to air;
- hang clothes that smell of tobacco smoke on a warm radiator for several hours;
- dilute one tablespoon of ammonia in a bucket of clean water, soak a rag in the solution and wipe the surfaces (floor, furniture, walls, if they are not covered with paper wallpaper);
- Set fire to a bay leaf on a plate; as soon as it starts to smoke, walk with it throughout the apartment;
- Place orange zest or coffee beans in several plates and place them in different places in the rooms;
- put a small amount of sea salt on a saucer (for example, which is used for baths), add three to four drops of essential oil to it;
- Light an aroma lamp with essential oils for several hours.
Advice! Essential oils of fir, pine, lemongrass, lavender or clove work best against unpleasant aromas.
Peculiarities
The smell in a smoker's mouth is specific. It intensifies when going outside when there is freshness around. If you smoke constantly, it is impossible to get rid of the smell of cigarettes forever. Temporary disguises are used. There are many products that provide an instant cosmetic effect. They will have to be used constantly after each cigarette smoked. Unfortunately, the tobacco “aura” will haunt the smoker constantly. The smoke is very caustic and immediately gets into your hair, clothes, hands and other things.
