Professional teeth cleaning at the dentist: what is it, methods

28.11.2019

What it is?

Hygienic teeth cleaning is a procedure performed by a dentist to completely remove tartar and pigmented plaque from the surface of the teeth. This manipulation allows you not only to maintain the beautiful appearance of your teeth, but also to reduce the risk of developing caries and other diseases. Photos before and after the procedure allow you to appreciate all its benefits.

It is advisable to have your teeth cleaned by a dentist at least twice a year. After it, the enamel acquires a natural shade, and many patients immediately insist on the whitening procedure to make their smile even more attractive.

Indications for the procedure

A hygienic procedure is prescribed to patients before dental treatment. Cleaning promotes efficient dental procedures. The procedure has other indications:

  • the presence of implants, braces, crowns, veneers and lumineers in the oral cavity;
  • stone formation;
  • plaque due to poor nutrition;
  • the patient’s desire to lighten the enamel by 2-3 tones.

Professional cleaning is recommended for patients suffering from chronic gastrointestinal diseases, as well as for women planning pregnancy. It is advisable to undergo it regularly for people who abuse coffee, tea, chocolate and smoke - these factors contribute to the rapid formation of pigmented plaque.

Possible contraindications

Despite the safety of hygienic cleaning, this procedure is contraindicated for some patients. It is not recommended if you have:

  • arrhythmias;
  • increased sensitivity or erosion of enamel;
  • gingivitis;
  • acute respiratory diseases.

Dental hygienic treatment is prohibited for pregnant women and adolescents who have not changed their primary dentition to a permanent one. If there are contraindications, the doctor can carry out the procedure manually or using special pastes and attachments for a drill. This will allow you to simultaneously remove deposits and polish the enamel.

Myth No. 2: electric brushes and professional hygiene spoil the enamel

Many are sure that electric brushes are evil that wear away enamel. But, according to experts, high-quality electric brushes provide equal pressure on the teeth, unlike regular ones. Ultrasonic cleaning, if the technique is followed, also does not damage the enamel. It is important to take the choice of a specialist seriously.

Dentist's opinion: professional oral hygiene correctly performed by a dentist cannot be harmful, but, on the contrary, is considered a mandatory therapeutic and preventive procedure to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Methods of hygienic brushing of teeth

Using ultrasound

Ultrasonic cleaning is considered the most effective method of combating deposits, since a special device ensures the removal of not only visible plaque, but also subgingival stone. The vibrations of a dental scaler allow you to get rid of old deposits, returning your teeth to their natural shade. The nozzle of the device is capable of reaching the most inaccessible places, while a pressure of cold water is supplied to reduce discomfort.

The procedure is virtually painless, but in some cases, specialists may use local anesthesia. The cleaning effect lasts for an average of a year.

Using a laser

The essence of such cleaning is the effect of laser beams on the liquid, since deposits on the enamel contain a lot of water. The moisture contained in the stone evaporates, as a result of which it comes off in layers, and the surface of the teeth remains clean. By simultaneously using a special gel and activating it with a laser, you can change the shade of dentin.

The effect of laser treatment of the oral cavity lasts about six months. The procedure is performed without pain or other discomfort in one visit to the doctor.

Sandblasting

This is one of the simplest teeth cleaning procedures. It is performed with a special device that delivers a powerful stream of air and water with the addition of a fine abrasive material - soda. This technique allows you to remove deposits from the most inaccessible places. The patient simultaneously gets rid of stone and pigmented plaque, receiving clean teeth, brightened by 3-4 tones.

To obtain the desired effect, the specialist must correctly adjust the force of the device’s jet, taking into account the hardness of the stone, the sensitivity of a person’s teeth and the thickness of his enamel. The result will be noticeable within six months.

Mechanical cleaning

This is one of the very first methods that began to be used in dentistry to remove plaque. Mechanical stone removal is contraindicated in patients with sensitive enamel. The technique allows you to remove even old plaque, providing a whiter smile, but to maintain the result you will have to give up smoking and eating food with coloring pigments.

The advantage of this hygienic procedure is that its cost is affordable for all patients.

Composition of sandblasting mixture

When sandblasting teeth, a special mixture is used, which includes small abrasive particles. Such particles are most often ordinary soda or salt. In some cases, glycine may be used. The sandblasting composition is finely dispersed, therefore it has a gentle effect on tooth enamel and does not injure it. Soft plaque is easily removed due to the presence of alkali in the cleaning powder. Alkali also gives teeth a natural shine.

The sandblasting mixture may contain an anesthetic drug. It is added if the sensitivity of the patient’s tooth enamel is increased. Before using an anesthetic, a specialist should conduct a test for an anesthetic drug in order to check the patient for the presence of an allergic reaction.

How is the procedure done?

Comprehensive teeth cleaning can be divided into 4 stages:

  1. The doctor removes tartar using an ultrasonic device. The water pressure cools the treated area of the mouth, reducing possible discomfort. At this stage, the enamel is cleaned superficially.
  2. The specialist uses a sandblaster to blast the teeth. It removes pigmentation, plaque and soft deposits, while simultaneously polishing the enamel. The method makes teeth smooth and returns their natural color.
  3. Using abrasive pastes, the doctor polishes the teeth. The technology allows you to grind even fillings. The abrasive for each person is selected individually. Polishing makes the enamel shiny and smooth, reducing the likelihood of caries.
  4. To strengthen the enamel and reduce its sensitivity, the specialist coats it with fluoride varnish. The resulting film lasts about a week, allowing you to consolidate the resulting effect.

Does it hurt?

Pain and sensitivity are individual sensations. No one can say with certainty that the patient will not experience pain during hygienic teeth cleaning. If the enamel is thin, or dentin is exposed in some areas, then through the tubules in the hard tissue of the tooth, unpleasant sensations are transmitted to its nerve. If the patient has healthy and strong units, there will be no discomfort during the procedure.

In terms of painlessness, laser cleaning takes first place. Before it is performed, the gums are protected with special devices.

Discomfort may also occur after the procedure, since some techniques are aimed at removing subgingival deposits located deep under the soft tissues.

Air Flow: price 2021

The price range for this service is very wide. Much will depend on the equipment: the cost of a service using an original EMS device will be an order of magnitude higher than working with an NSK AirFlow handpiece. Accordingly, this will greatly affect the final cost of the service.

In addition, the price depends on whether you need to do only Air flow, or whether you need a comprehensive cleaning, which will also include ultrasonic cleaning + fluoridation of teeth after the procedure. Such a comprehensive cleaning in the regions will cost starting from 2500 rubles, in Moscow - from 3500-4000 rubles (in economy class clinics).

If you only need to do Air Flow, the price in different Moscow clinics ranges from 2,500 thousand to 5,000 rubles.

Possible negative consequences

After the procedure, in some cases, patients experience bleeding gums and tooth sensitivity to thermal irritants. As a rule, this discomfort is temporary and goes away after a few days. Possible reasons:

At the time of cleaning, the patient’s gums were inflamed, and the condition was aggravated due to the stone located on the subgingival part of the teeth. In this case, the next step will be periodontal treatment. Damage to soft tissues during dental treatment. Ultrasound and sandblasting have a mechanical effect on the teeth, so after the procedure, swelling, bleeding or soreness of the mucous membrane may occur. The problem can be eliminated by rinsing with sage or chamomile infusions. Damage to healthy gums due to unprofessionalism of doctors. This complication is very rare, especially when the procedure is performed by specialists in large cities.

Reviews

Below are some reviews. If you have something to say, leave your feedback in the comments below the article, it will be useful to our readers.

Vladimir Perepechko, Krasnodar.

I don’t smoke, but for several years now I have been a real “coffee addict”, capable of drinking several cups in a row.

After drinking your favorite drink, a persistent yellow plaque has formed on your teeth that cannot be removed with a toothbrush.

A friend recommended sandblasting. I didn’t put off going to the clinic until later.

I expected to spend a long time in it, but it was all over in 40 minutes: conversation with the doctor, ultrasonic teeth cleaning, sandblasting procedure, grinding.

None of the above caused me any noticeable discomfort.

Vasilisa Gorbatko, Kazan.

I heard about sandblasting teeth cleaning and mentally compared it to brushing teeth with an emery tool.

But she still dared, because she really wanted to impress her colleagues. But the process turned out to be completely painless and short-lived.

The doctor only needed one attachment; I had a special tube in my mouth to remove saliva and fluid.

Finally, the dentist cleaned my teeth with a special paste and polished their surface. And now - the snow-white smile belongs to me!

Myth No. 5: After cleaning, plaque forms even faster

There is an opinion that after brushing, plaque appears on the teeth even faster and becomes even more noticeable. This can actually happen if you turn to a non-professional. During the procedure, an Air-flow device is used, which uses sand pressure to remove dark plaque in hard-to-reach places. The enamel becomes slightly uneven, the new coating fits perfectly on it.

Dentist's opinion: in order to avoid this undesirable effect, competent doctors always polish the surface of the teeth with brushes and professional toothpaste after Air-flow. After this treatment, the teeth become perfectly smooth and clean again.
