Protection for Boxer's teeth: what is it called, how much does it cost and what is it for?
Hello, friends.
Boxer teeth protection, what is it called? Basketball players also have a version of this thing. And it's called a mouth guard. A good boxer cannot be determined by his appearance. A healthy boar with huge cans and a beard looks very impressive, but it may well be blown away after the first pass through the liver. A stern appearance and aggressive swagger in behavior are often just a mask that falls off with the first missed blows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytpolicyandsafetyru
And now a big guy with arms three times thicker than yours asks you not to hit so hard or to wear 16-ounce gloves. In the same way, little suffocates, dirty little things, which in ordinary life you can’t look at without tears - you can spit and rub them, sometimes show such miracles in the ring that you become a little ashamed of yourself.
Evaluation of the result obtained
After the above steps, the mouthguard should have an imprint of all the Boxer’s teeth in detail, then it will tightly protect the teeth and protect the oral cavity from unwanted damage. If the mouthguard is maxillary, then after cooking it should remain on the upper teeth without support. If the teeth marks are weak and insignificant, and the mouth guard does not hold and does not fix the teeth well, it is a bad mouth guard. With a strong blow, she will “lose” all her teeth. If you didn’t achieve the desired result the first time, you can always “digest” the mouthguard again.
In order for a mouth guard to last longer, you need to store it properly and take care of its condition. After training, you need to rinse it, or even better, clean it with a brush and toothpaste, like your teeth in the morning. This will protect it and its owner from the accumulation of germs inside the mouthguard. It must be stored in a special container in the form of a plastic box in which the mouth guard was originally sold.
Video about making a boxing mouthguard
Purpose of the mouth guard
What is this equipment for? Its main function is to protect the athlete’s teeth. This is a mandatory attribute for a boxer during a fight or sparring.
At the beginning of the development of boxing, mouthguards were not used. And it is not surprising that boxers then were often toothless. And in severe cases, tooth fragments penetrated the trachea, cut the mucous membrane, etc.
The mouth guard is also used in other fighting disciplines. And this is logical, because she:
- Effectively protects teeth and jaws.
- Reduces the risk of jaw fracture and concussion.
- Helps prevent tracheal obstruction. After all, when a tooth is knocked out, air does not flow.
- Helps reduce the number of lacerations in the oral cavity.
Today, elastic polymers are used to make mouthguards. When heated, they change their shape. Therefore, the mouthguard can be easily adjusted to an individual bite. This factor leads to a decrease in intracranial pressure and reduces the load on the cervical vertebrae.
According to statistics, a dental guard helps keep rows of teeth intact during a fight, even with knockouts to the chin.
Using a mouthguard saves money
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer an injury during training and competition with unprotected teeth than with a properly fitted mouthguard. You can roughly guess how much a visit to a competent dentist costs now. This means that investing in this inexpensive safety gear can save you a lot of money. Suffice it to say that the cost of implants can reach several thousand rubles.
Varieties of mouth guards
The most common modification is single-jawed.
- Wearing comfort.
- Practicality.
- Face protection from impacts.
- Does not create any obstruction to breathing.
The two-jaw version is considered more reliable. But it is very uncomfortable and makes breathing difficult. Therefore, it is used less often.
Professional such equipment is also a fixative. To develop its convenience, it is important to comply with the following criteria:
- The plates must be flexible and durable.
- There should be no pain when wearing it.
- It should have no taste or smell.
Its advantages:
- Clear speech.
- Free breathing.
About production
Mouthguards produced at enterprises have specific parameters and shapes. These are cast products. There is no need to customize them. You can buy a cheap version, but it has a weak protective effect. You can pay a serious price for such cheapness.
Molded plates are held in high esteem by both beginners and professionals. During the production of caps, a special thermoplastic blank is used. If a product made from this material is placed in water at a temperature of 95 C, it softens like plasticine. It can be given the shape of a certain row of teeth. To do this, after heating, the workpiece is slightly cooled and pressed tightly against the teeth with your fingers. Once cooled, it is ready for use.
The best option is to create a mouth guard using a plaster cast. The procedure takes place in a dental office.
How to prepare a mouthguard for boxing: specifics and tips
Any contact athlete, even a novice boxer who is just starting to practice boxing, is sure to face the question - how to cook a mouth guard? For boxing, this type of equipment is especially important, because a mouth guard (from the German “kappe”, which means “cover”) protects the athlete from serious injuries to the jaw. Of course, this is not a panacea for knockouts, as many people believe, but the mouthguard really helps to avoid cuts, displacement and fractures of the jaw even during the toughest fights.
The question of how to prepare a mouthguard for boxing is also important because a mouthguard is functional only in a situation if it anatomically matches the athlete’s jaw, that is, if it is welded correctly. If the mouthguard is prepared incorrectly, it will only interfere and become a real problem for the fighter. Please note that today you can purchase the following types of mouthguards:
- Standard mouthguards. This type of mouthguard for boxing does not need to be prepared; it has a static, permanent shape and cannot be changed. These mouthguards are universal, but not always comfortable.
- Thermoplastic mouthguards. They are made of flexible plastic that easily changes shape when heated and immediately hardens when cooled. This type of boxing mouthguard is “brewed”.
- Individual mouthguards. In most cases, this option is used only by individual boxers; the mouthguard is created in the laboratory, taking into account all the anatomical features of a particular jaw.
In other words, if you are wondering how to properly cook a boxing mouth guard, then we are talking about a thermoplastic version. Today, these trays have become widespread because they make it easy to obtain a product of the desired shape, do not require special equipment when “cooking” and are quite inexpensive.
Technology of “cooking” a boxing mouthguard
The technology for cooking (more precisely, boiling) a mouth guard for boxing is quite simple, but even the simplest action requires strict adherence to the algorithm. If you make a mistake or violate the specified time intervals, then you may not be able to make a mouthguard with which you will be comfortable and comfortable boxing. So, here is the sequence of actions you need to perform:
- Prepare two vessels with a wide neck, one should contain just boiled water, the other should contain cooled (but not ice-cold) water.
- Remove the mouth guard from the packaging and carefully place it in a container of boiling water (provide yourself with a device for further safe removal of the mouth guard).
- The mouth guard needs to “brew” from 30 to 60 seconds; this is the optimal period; if you reduce it, the mouth guard will not “soften” enough; if you exceed it, the plastic may become too pliable and will not recover.
- After the specified time period has passed, remove the mouthguard from the water and clamp it in your mouth between your jaws. Don't worry - the mouthguard won't be hot. Bite down firmly on the mouthguard and, if necessary, press the protruding edges against your jaw with your fingers.
- On average, manufacturers of modern mouth guards indicate that it takes at least 30 seconds and no more than 3 minutes for the mouth guard to precisely take the desired shape.
- Then take out the mouthguard (don't be afraid - it's not toffee, it won't stick to your teeth) and put it in the cooled liquid for just a couple of minutes so that it hardens thoroughly.
- Remove the mouthguard from the water and try it on. If you welded the mouthguard correctly, it will fit perfectly to your jaw and will become a faithful and reliable friend for the coming months of training.

In boxing you will get hit on the head and knocked out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytaboutru
No, it doesn't hurt. More precisely, it is not an acute pain. A blow to the head is deafening, shocking, it is very difficult for the psyche to bear, but, let’s be honest, it is bearable. The real pain from blows to the head comes a little later, and it is dull and aching. Moreover, gloves and a helmet soften the blow. Accurate blows to the body are transferred much more sharply.
A well-delivered blow to the liver or the sun makes a person curl up and not think about anything else - only about stopping all this violence. If continuing a fight after a missed blow to the head is often a matter of willpower, then after a missed blow to the body a fighter may simply be physically unable to fight further.
To deliver a knockout blow, you need to spend several years, then enter competitions and clearly hit a person who is an athlete of the same level. No, it's not easy. Most boxing fights do not end in knockouts, but are decided on points - just look at the World Championships or the Olympics.
And even less often, a knockout can be found during training and regular sparring. A knockout is an out-of-the-ordinary event, not a normal occurrence in boxing. To grow to such a level when you go out to fight with opponents who are really capable of knocking you out with half a click, you need to work in the gym for many years. It is unlikely that this will happen to most people.
Teeth are knocked out in boxing
Very rarely at high-class competitions. Some coaches cannot remember a single similar incident in their entire career. Look at professional boxers - almost none of them have gaps in their smile. Firstly, a blow with a glove spreads over a larger area - it’s not like driving a bare fist into the face and hitting your tooth directly with your knuckle.
Secondly, a helmet (let’s agree that we conduct all sparring with a helmet, even though the Amateur Boxing Federation canceled them at competitions). All helmets protect the jaw on the sides and additionally distribute the impact force across its surface. Thirdly, mouth guard. Mouthguards in boxing are used only for the upper jaw - the lower one is movable and partially absorbs shock.
Only punks do boxing
To put it very crudely, those involved in boxing can be divided into “ferrets” and “hamsters”. “Ferrets” are aggressive, they are fighters, they need thrills. They are passionate. They love sparring, they love competition, and if there was no boxing, they would have to spar on the street with good citizens.
Hamsters are herbivores. They are not aggressive, they have no desire to hurt others, but “hamsters” often become victims of “ferrets” in life. And “hamsters” need to be able to stand up for themselves. While not having the same level of natural recklessness as ferrets, the hamster must have more courage to come to the boxing gym, and every sparring for him is a lot of stress, and not pleasure, as for the ferret. It is precisely because of stress that there is such a high turnover in boxing sections: many beginners simply cannot stand the violence against themselves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytcreatorsru
The motivation of the “hamster” is fundamentally different from the motivation of the “ferret”: he does not want thrills - he wants to strengthen his spirit and body, so that in life another rude “ferret” will not be able to abuse him and his loved ones. Most boxers are “hamsters” who want to become strong “hamsters”. The author too. “Ferrets” at most 30%.
German boxer: a good-natured man with a menacing look
Initially, this dog was conceived by its creators as an ideal weapon. It was for this purpose that when it was bred, the new breed contained the most universal fighting qualities that could provide real assistance to the owner on the battlefield. In addition to their auxiliary function, such dogs were perfectly suited for direct confrontation with the enemy: a downed body, powerful limbs and deadly jaws turned the animal into an ideal killing machine. However, the ominous reputation could not deceive true connoisseurs of canine nature - this breed is one of the most popular among kind people in the modern world.

BOXER
NAMES AND NAMES FOR DOGS
Video: @gohabotanova
A German boxer, also known as a German bulldog or simply a boxer - the “professional affiliation” is already contained in the very name of this dog. Indeed, like the athlete of the same name, the main purpose of this breed is combat. Boxers are still one of the most popular participants in the universally banned dog fighting. The breed first saw the light of day in Bavaria in 1850. Her ancestors are the Brabant War Dog and the English Bulldog. Brabant dogs are descendants of the ancient Roman Molossians, dogs originally intended to participate in hunting medium and large game. The force of clenching of the jaws turns them into a real living trap - animals are able to breathe evenly, even by clenching their teeth tightly. The German boxer fully adopted all these qualities, immediately establishing himself as an excellent service dog. It also gained popularity in Russia - after the revolution, Rostov-on-Don, then Leningrad, became the center of boxer breeding. For more than a century of residence, this breed is well known and loved both on the territory of the Russian Federation and in the republics of the former USSR. Our guest today lives in Kazakhstan, and his hostess Gauhar @gohabotanova will introduce him to us . With its help, we will try to figure out why the fighting breed is so attractive to millions of completely peaceful and friendly people?
Photo: @gohabotanova
- Hello, Gauhar! Introduce us your pet!
- Hello! This is Roy, whom we named after the famous boxer Roy Jones Jr. Roy will be eight years old in October.
- Oh, a very respectable period for a pet! I think during this time you have studied it well. Now let's go back eight years and remember the story of your acquaintance. Why did you choose a boxer, where did you find the puppy and how was your first meeting?
— In our family, Roy has become a real compromise dog. At one time, my husband wanted to get a representative of a larger breed - a Rottweiler or an Amstaff, but I dreamed of something small and compact, like a pug. No one wanted to give in, and then we decided to choose a breed that would combine the features of all these dogs. Soon such a breed was found, and a German boxer fit perfectly into the image.
Why? It's not fair!

— Were you not frightened by his formidable reputation?
- On the contrary, in all the reviews that we read, German Boxers were described as a breed suitable even for inexperienced owners. They are easy to train, perform well as guards, but at the same time they are very kind and affectionate.

- I believe)))
“We soon became convinced of this from our own experience. Our first acquaintance happened right on New Year's Day. Roy came to me in my husband's bosom as a New Year's gift. Until now, this is probably the brightest, most joyful and memorable gift in my life! The puppy quickly and easily settled into his new place. He didn’t hide in a corner, didn’t whine or yap - he immediately realized that he was at home, safe. On New Year's Eve, the baby slept right on my head, wincing every time from the explosions of firecrackers.

- A lot of time has passed since then. Today Roy is a full member of your family, whom you probably know well. Tell me, what kind of dog is this?
— Roy is everyone’s favorite and an invariably bright element of our daily life. Difficulties with him arose only in the first year of life, when the puppy grew up, gradually delving into our “rules of the game.” For the successful adaptation of the baby, we had to pay with the integrity of the linoleum, a pair of my boots and some other small things that now remain only in our memories. But gradually Roy grew up and became comfortable, turning into an exceptionally obedient and well-mannered pet. I even call him a big cat, for his soft movements and love for sleep. Roy has many favorite toys, and when we return from work, he always carries one of them in his mouth as a kind of greeting. At the same time, he clearly separates what is permitted and what is forbidden - we calmly leave food on the table, and it never disappears from there. In general, he loves to play and show off, we even have a special command: “Who’s wagging his butt here?”, after which Roy begins to masterfully write out a lambada with his butt...

- Great! Tell us about caring for a boxer. In appearance, he doesn’t seem to look like a “problem” dog, but perhaps there are still some “pitfalls” in this matter?
- That’s right, the German boxer doesn’t give us any problems at all. No grooming or frequent bathing - these are naturally very clean animals. Trimming nails - only if the dog doesn’t walk enough, we don’t have a problem with this, so the nails wear down naturally. I would like to separately note only two points. Firstly, this is ear cropping, which is a very responsible procedure. However, we did not stop our Swarm; now this is not a mandatory condition. Secondly, purchasing clothes for the winter. The lack of long hair and dense undercoat also has a downside - without additional “devices” the dog freezes. Therefore, at least one overall is necessary in case of extreme cold. In general, this is all the difficulties. Yes, one more thing – but this is not a problem, but a recommended condition. Despite its menacing appearance, the boxer is not a kennel dog at all. This guy loves comfort, especially next to his owner, so the best place for him is on the couch next to you.

- A very important point, it’s good that you mentioned it. It is socialization that will allow a fighting dog to turn into a cozy pet. Let's move on to the diet. What kind of food does Roy prefer?
— Unlike grooming, the diet for German boxers is not so simple. They are genetically predisposed to a number of serious diseases associated with poor nutrition. Many boxers are allergic, and they are also at risk of developing cancer and heart failure. Obviously, among so many risks, preparing a diet is a strictly individual matter, depending on the place of residence, lifestyle, and the characteristics of a particular individual. For example, we were never able to create a suitable menu from “natural food”; Roy’s body accepted only the industrial food “Pro Plan”. But this is by no means a recommendation for owners of this breed; it is likely that their pet will have completely different preferences.

— I believe that choosing a diet is the first thing new owners of a boxer puppy should think about. It’s even better to consult a specialist in this matter. However, enough recommendations. Tell us more about Roy. Is the German boxer really that formidable in real life?
“I don’t know, perhaps, with appropriate training, he really does make an ideal guard dog.” But we didn’t set such a goal for ourselves, wanting to see just an affectionate and happy pet nearby. Perhaps this is what allowed Roy to reveal his own individuality instead of aggression. You know, this is a very domestic dog. Especially as a child, he did not like long walks, but how can he explain this to his owners? Then Roy began to artificially limp when walking, as if he had injured his leg. Of course, at first we immediately returned home, until we realized that the pet was injured too often)).
Photo: @gohabotanova
Video: @gohabotanova
He's still a cunning guy. For example, Roy is capable of setting other dogs up - this is not a joke now. Once on the street we came across a wounded pigeon. Roy, knowing that such “prey” should not be grabbed, avoided him. However, then we met a neighbor leading her two boxer girls on a leash. At that moment, Roy approached one of them, Rimma, and, as if by chance, led her to the dove, without hinting at anything... Rima reacted to the “prey” more naturally, grabbing the dove in her teeth. With the fluttering bird she immediately took off, followed by her angry owner. And at that moment Roy was spinning on his feet, showing me with all his appearance that he was not like that, he was obedient. Can you imagine what it's like?! )) And it was not just an accident, the next time he pulled a similar trick with a young shepherd dog, only instead of a dove there was a bone. The shepherd's owner was the first to see the bone and hid it from his foolish pet, but Roy kindly helped his young friend find the bone. Having created another prank and admiring its results, my pet... smiled! You can’t believe it, but boxers really have very rich facial expressions - I swear that I saw something like a grin on his cunning face!
However, apart from insidious intrigues, this guy is no longer dangerous in any way - his only fight took place with two furious ninja cats, from which my striped guard hid in fear behind my back.

- We have only one swarm. I love cats very much, but my husband, unfortunately, is allergic to cat fur. So Roy experiences the fullness of our love.
- Gauhar, thank you for the interesting story about this breed, which is formidable in appearance and sweet in content. And now, according to our good tradition, I suggest you directly address our readers.
