How does Aquafresh toothpaste differ from other toothpastes?
At first, the brand produced toothpastes that prevented bleeding gums and caries, but today, under the Aquafresh brand, a wide range of oral care products is produced: several types of toothbrushes, rinses, toothpastes for prevention and treatment, as well as White Trays whitening gel strips , released already in February 2007. There is also Aquafresh toothpaste with a dispenser.
If we talk about toothpastes of this brand, they are all multi-component in their composition, but the base always includes three ingredients: a binary fluoride system, calcium carbonate and calcium glycerophosphate.
Today the company can offer a large selection of products, including several types of toothpastes.

The packaging is familiar to most, thanks to the proprietary design of Aquafresh toothpaste, and it is immediately stated that it has protection against “sugar acid” (literal translation of the inscription on the bottom right of the package). Of course, it is designed to increase buyer confidence in the product, but in reality not everything is so rosy, as you will learn from the review.
To make it even more convincing, the manufacturer added inscriptions to the box and tube: healthy gums, strong teeth, fresh breath. Looking ahead, I would like to say that only the latter can somehow correspond to reality. The remaining inscriptions should not be taken into account, because the most important is the composition, which will be discussed below.

We unpacked and took out a tube of Aquafresh illuminating-mint toothpaste
For a little over $1.5, we got a tube volume of 100 ml. Of the certificates on the box, EAC is indicated - on Eurasian compliance with technical regulations. It is also indicated that the tube is intended for packaging cosmetics (12M); the circular arrows indicate the possibility of subsequent processing of the packaging.
The EAC certificate does not indicate high quality of the product. And that: toothpaste does not contain prohibited substances, harmful or dangerous substances, and does not contain more than a certain percentage of the volume of the product. In other words, the EAC certificate simply provides a guarantee that: the product cannot cause fatal or irreparable harm to human health.
The benefits of toothpaste?! The question remains open and we will try to close it. Some people will no longer read, because such “quality” will be enough for them; for others, it’s absolutely not. The next important point is the country of production. In the case of Aquafresh refreshing mint toothpaste, the Slovak Republic is located, or rather, the production is located in Levice, judging by the information on the box. It is difficult to form even a general subjective opinion about the quality of goods from this country, because... We do not know about other companies from this country. Therefore, the main guideline will be the composition, although all our reviews place the main emphasis on the composition.

Next, perhaps the most important point to which we pay special attention is the composition. And it includes: Aqua, Hydrated Silica, Sorbitol, Glycerin, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Xanthan Gum, Aroma, Titanium Dioxide, PEG-6, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Saccharin, Carrageenan, Limonene, Cl 73360 (red), Cl 74160 ( blue). Contains sodium fluoride. Mass fraction of fluoride 0.145%.

Now let's look at each of the components and how they affect human health:
- Aqua is ordinary water, and the question here is what quality it was used in production;
- Hydrated Silica - hydrated silicon dioxide - is safe for health in small doses;
- Sorbitol - sorbitol - safe for health;
- Glycerin - glycerin - is safe for health, but in cheap toothpastes, as in our case, animal origin can be used;
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - Sodium lauryl sulfate - used to form foam, a substance harmful to the body, described in more detail in a separate article;
- Xanthan Gum - xanthan gum/resin - thickener, safe for human health;
- Aroma - flavoring, most likely of synthetic origin;
- Titanium Dioxide - titanium dioxide is a contrast agent with good whitening properties. It is used to give cosmetics a white color and light resistance; if the raw materials are cheap, it is harmful to health;
- PEG-6 - emulsifier - if the raw material is not purified, then this substance turns into a carcinogen;
- Sodium Fluoride - sodium fluoride - according to manufacturers, is needed to strengthen enamel, but it can lead to problems with the cardiovascular system, fluorosis or death, the lethal dose for a person weighing 70 kg is 5-10 grams;
- Sodium Saccharin - sodium saccharin - a cheap artificial sweetener, 300-500 times sweeter than sugar, this substance is banned or restricted for use in many countries, leads to various health problems, the permissible daily dose is 5 mg per 1 kg of human body weight;
- Carrageenan - a stabilizer - causes inflammatory processes, including the gastrointestinal tract, and other diseases, including atherosclerosis; Limonene - a flavoring and disinfectant component - can cause allergies;

- Cl 73360 (red), Cl 74260 (green), Cl 74160 (blue) - synthetic dyes - can accumulate in the body, cause allergies and other health problems, have not been fully studied.
The next part of the packaging tells us that it contains fluoride. It’s good that manufacturers were required to indicate how much it contains in toothpaste. But even the very presence of fluoride should discourage buyers from buying such toothpaste. Why?! The thing is that fluoride replaces calcium in bone tissue. This leads to their fragility.
If you touch your teeth, fluoride changes the color of your teeth, makes them brittle and leads to fluorosis. Not immediately, but naturally as you use such toothpastes.

Italian paste, the active ingredients of which are xylitol (polyhydric alcohol) and calcium compound, was developed specifically for young children. Since the paste contains calcium glycerophosphate, you don’t have to worry about strengthening your baby’s teeth. The second active component is xylitol: it neutralizes harmful acids and prevents the development of caries.
The paste can be swallowed - it will not cause any harm to the child. In addition, despite imported production, the paste is inexpensive.
"Lacalut Baby" (Lakalut Baby) (0-4 years)
German paste, which contains a fluorine compound called aminofluoride, is one of the most effective fluoride components existing today. This substance strengthens the enamel (many other chemical compounds can do this) and forms a film during the cleaning process, due to the presence of which fluoride continues to penetrate into the dental tissues for a couple of hours after the end of the cleaning procedure.
This is very important, because it is rare for young children to brush their gums and teeth for more than one and a half minutes: in such a short period of time, not all substances have time to be absorbed. The fluoride content is quite low (250 ppm), so fluoride, even if the baby swallows the paste, will not harm him.
This paste is approved by German dentists.
"Elmex Children's" (from 1 year to 6 years)
German paste designed for baby teeth. It is used to prevent caries: the anti-caries effect is ensured by the presence of one of the most effective fluorine compounds. The product is recommended for children suffering from regular caries. If the baby has a single case of carious formation, it is better to pay attention to the previous sample.

This is not a paste, but a gel developed by a German company. The domestically produced paste intensively saturates the enamel with calcium. It can be used, as the manufacturer claims, by people from birth to old age. It is notable for the fact that it contains hydroxyapatite, one of the most digestible calcium compounds, which restores and strengthens enamel.
It contains no parabens (substances used as preservatives in cosmetology) or other harmful substances, so it can be safely swallowed.
The paste contains enzymes that have the property of increasing mucosal immunity. Using the product is equally beneficial for strengthening teeth and preventing the development of gum disease.
The only drawback of the paste is its rather high cost, which, however, is explained by its ideal composition.
"SPLAT Junior" (Junior) (0-4 years)
Foam is a convenient form of familiar toothpaste, easy to use for children. There are two foam options:
- foam containing calcis and special enzymes without fluoride;
- foam with minimal fluoride content.
The foam is ideal for use when the first teeth appear. In addition, with its help it is convenient to care for the jaw in the first years of a person’s life. The product contains special enzymes that enhance immunity, which is especially important for preventing the development of gum disease.
The presence of licorice and creatine in the composition helps to significantly reduce the inflammation that is inevitable when the first teeth appear. Dentists recommend using foam without fluoride during the first year of a child’s life, and after a year - the second option.
"ROCS - PRO Baby" (ROCS - PRO Baby) (from 0 to 3 years)
Fluorine in this domestic paste is replaced by xylitol and a calcium compound.
Not a bad paste, but clearly overpriced when compared with analogues (more than 200 rubles for a 45 ml tube). For example, Italian pasta, considered the very first in this article, with an almost identical composition, costs several times cheaper than a domestic product produced in the Moscow region. What exactly explains this is unknown.
"ROCS Baby" (ROCS Baby) with chamomile (0-3 years)
A paste with abrasive components that removes soft plaque well. Contains xylitol (an inactive isomer), which neutralizes acids in the mouth and makes a small contribution to protection against caries. The paste contains alginic acid salt and chamomile extract: both components have an anti-inflammatory and calming effect.
The big disadvantage of the product is the absence of at least one ingredient that strengthens the enamel. It also lacks fluoride, which provides much stronger protection against caries than xylitol. The paste can be used during teething, as it protects and soothes the gums well, but the rest of the time it is better to refrain from using it for the reasons stated above.
"Silca Putzi" with banana flavor (from one year to 6 years of age)
German low abrasive paste. There are no dyes in it, so there is no need to worry if your baby swallows it.
The paste also does not contain fluorine and calcium, so it is not advisable to use only this one paste on an ongoing basis: it is better to alternate with the use of another paste that contains amino fluoride or Calcii glycerophosphas.
Despite the fact that the product is imported, it has an affordable price that can compete even with domestically produced goods.
