Throat diseases can occur not only in winter. Drinking ice water on a hot summer day is enough to trigger an inflammatory process . Typically, in such situations, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed - Orasept or Tantum Verde. However, medications have different therapeutic effects. Which one is better?
pharmachologic effect
Manufacturer: Angelini Francesco, Italy
Release form: spray, rinse solution, lozenges
Active ingredient: Benzydamine
Synonyms: Oralcept, Angidak, Asterisk ENT, Tenflex
Tantum Verde, by stabilizing cell membranes and suppressing the synthesis of prostaglandins, has a local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect.
Benzidamine, which is part of Tantum Verde, exhibits an antiseptic effect against many microbes, quickly penetrating their cells and thereby disrupting metabolic processes.
In addition, the drug has a detrimental effect on fungi of the genus Candida, modifying the cell wall and preventing the reproduction of the fungal cell.
Tantum Verde is well absorbed by the mucous membrane and has a local effect; it is absorbed into the blood in small quantities and does not exhibit a systemic effect.
Comparison of side effects of Tantum verdya and Oralcept
Side effects or adverse events are any adverse medical event that occurs in a subject after administration of a drug.
Tantum's rate of adverse events is almost the same as Oralcept's. They both have few side effects. This implies that the frequency of their occurrence is low, that is, the indicator of how many cases of an undesirable effect of treatment are possible and registered is low. The undesirable effect on the body, the strength of influence and the toxic effect of Tantum are probably similar to Oralcept: how quickly the body recovers after taking it and whether it recovers at all.
Indications for use Tantum Verde
Tantum Verde is used for various infectious inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, pharynx and other ENT organs:
- stomatitis, glossitis, gingivitis;
- tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis;
- candidiasis of the oral mucosa;
- inflammation of the salivary glands;
- periodontal disease.
Tantum Verde is also used to relieve pain, inflammation and prevent infection after tooth extraction and after other surgical interventions and jaw injuries.
special instructions
If a burning sensation appears in the area of application, it is recommended to dilute the solution: the water level is brought to the level of the mark on a special graduated glass supplied with the package. Dilution 1:2.
Avoid getting the spray into your eyes when sprayed. The medication does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and machines.
Which is better: Tantum Verde or Hexoral?
Both drugs are prescribed for inflammatory diseases of the mouth to suppress microbial flora.
Hexoral has pronounced antimicrobial activity, and Tantum Verde is characterized by additional pain relief. The two medications can be used together to achieve better results.
Tantum Verde - instructions for use
Any form of Tantum Verde should be consumed after meals and after its use it is not recommended to drink or eat for 2-3 hours.
The spray is dosed in such a way that one injection contains 0.255 mg of Benzydamine. Based on this, the single dose varies depending on age:
- for adults – 4–8 injections;
- for children 6–12 years old – 4;
- for children 3–6 years old – 1.
Such doses can be 2–6 times a day. The technique of using the spray is described in detail in the instructions for use of Tantum Verde. While irrigating the throat, you should hold your breath.
Tantum Verde rinse solution is used by adults and children from 12 years old, 15 ml 2-3 times a day, can be diluted with water 1:1. Be sure to spit out the solution after rinsing.
The tablets should be dissolved without chewing or swallowing for adults and children over 6 years of age. A child from 6 to 12 years of age must take the medicine under the supervision of an adult.
Despite the pleasant taste of the drug, under no circumstances should the recommended dose be increased. You should not take the drug for more than a week, if no cure has occurred during this time, you should consult a doctor.
Comparison of addiction between Tantum verdya and Oralcept
Like safety, addiction also involves many factors that must be considered when evaluating a drug.
So, the totality of the values of such parameters as “o syndrome” in Tantum is quite similar to the similar values in Oralcept. Withdrawal syndrome is a pathological condition that occurs after the cessation of intake of addictive or dependent substances into the body. And resistance is understood as initial immunity to a drug; in this it differs from addiction, when immunity to a drug develops over a certain period of time. The presence of resistance can only be stated if an attempt has been made to increase the dose of the drug to the maximum possible. At the same time, Tantum believes that the meaning of the “syndrome” is quite small, however, the same as with Oralcept.
Analogues of Tantum Verde
Tantum Verde can be replaced primarily with synonyms, that is, with medications containing Benzydamine, for example Oralcept or Angidac.
There are analogs of Tantum Verde that contain, in addition to Benzydamine, additional components that enhance its effect, for example, Septolete Total.
The analogue Tantum Verde Forte contains twice the concentration of the active substance, and therefore requires half the single dose.
Other Tantum Verde analogues have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibacterial effects, thanks to other components:
- Panavir Inlight containing potato shoot extract.
- Lugol's solution, made on the basis of iodine and glycerin.
- Lyzobakt and Laripront, which contain lysozyme - a natural antiseptic.
- Strepsils Intensive is a spray based on another anti-inflammatory component - Flurbiprofen.
- Grammidin Neo, Hexasprey, containing local antibiotics and antiseptics.

Comparison of safety of Tantum verdya and Oralcept
The safety of a drug includes many factors.
At the same time, it is higher with Tantum than with Oralcept. It is important where the drug is metabolized: drugs are excreted from the body either unchanged or in the form of products of their biochemical transformations. Metabolism occurs spontaneously, but most often involves major organs such as the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, brain and others. When assessing metabolism in Tantum, just like in Oralcept, we look at which organ is the metabolizing organ and how critical the effect on it is.
The risk-benefit ratio is when the prescription of a drug is undesirable, but justified under certain conditions and circumstances, with the obligatory observance of caution in use. At the same time, Tantum has fewer risks when used than Oralcept.
Also, when calculating safety, it is taken into account whether only allergic reactions occur or possible dysfunction of the main organs. In other matters, as well as the reversibility of the consequences of using Tantum verdya and Oralcept.
Tantum Verde or Hexoral – which is better and more effective?
Manufacturer: Johnson & Johnson, Russia
Release form: spray, rinse solution
Active ingredient: Hexetidine

According to patient reviews, alternating use of these two drugs works best.
Similarities of means
Orasept and Tantum Verde are not pharmacological analogues, but they have some similar properties and practical uses:
- Both are prescribed in ENT practice and dentistry.
- They have almost identical dosages.
- Suitable for complex treatment of diseases.
- Both are metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys.
- Pregnant women are allowed to use these medications under medical supervision.
- Rarely have a negative effect on the body.
- Both can (especially in overdose) affect the functioning of the nervous system.
- Available without a prescription.

The analogue of Miramistin is also popular in pediatrics: due to its neutral taste and the absence of unnecessary additives, it is better to use Miramistin for irrigating a child’s throat from the age of three.
