A one-piece crown is a non-removable orthopedic structure, for the manufacture of which metals or their alloys are used. Previously, such prostheses were made by stamping, so they were the same. Today, they have been replaced by more advanced analogues, which differ in individual casts. They fit tightly to the neck of the tooth, which prevents the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms under them that can cause the development of caries. In addition, they will not cause irritation to surrounding tissues. Due to their strength characteristics, they are well suited for prosthetics of masticatory units. At the same time, their insufficiently presentable appearance does not make them an ideal option for incisors and canines, but their use is possible if there is a coating layer.

Indications and contraindications
Crowns are indicated in cases where there is significant tooth damage due to carious diseases or for other reasons, if the defects cannot be eliminated with an inlay or filling. In addition, they can be used to restore the aesthetic and chewing functions of teeth. They are also indicated in cases of loss of one or more teeth.
Teeth should not be covered with these structures if there are incurable foci of chronic periodontal inflammation or teeth with pathological mobility. In addition, they are contraindicated in case of general weakening of the body after suffering serious illnesses. In more detail, the issue of the admissibility of installing solid crowns is decided individually with the dentist.
Kinds
A solid metal crown can be made from different materials.
Such products can be:
- metal with spraying,
- without spraying,
- with lining,
- combined bridge prosthesis.
The design without coating does not look very aesthetically pleasing; it is made of polished metal. It has a relatively low price, but not everyone is happy with it.
If aesthetics are important to the patient, then you should choose a crown with a coating that imitates gold. They look more attractive, but you should be careful when spraying: it can have a negative effect on the mucous membrane.
A one-piece crown with ceramic lining is perhaps the most aesthetic option of the three already presented - it has an overlay made of ceramic or plastic, which is located on its front surface. Of course, the pad also needs to be treated with care, because it is made of fragile materials, but if you follow the rules of care, it will last a long time.
A combined prosthesis is created from several metal-ceramic crowns that cover the smile area, and from solid polished crowns.
Cost of services

Solid cast crown, special alloy (excluding metal cost) | RUB 9550.00 |
Solid crown for implant | 7130.00 RUR |
Of course, solid crowns have disadvantages. One of the few noteworthy “cons” is its lack of aesthetics. Solid crowns have the color of the material from which they are made. Some people think that a smile with an admixture of “metal” looks too unnatural. But this does not in any way detract from the advantages of this type of prosthesis. Moreover, the modern range of dental or completely change the color of the crown.

Advantages and disadvantages
Such products have the following advantages:
- High quality and the ability to manufacture a design taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient’s jaw. Products are created individually for each tooth, they follow its shape and fit tightly to the gums.
- Durability and abrasion resistance. The structures are made from durable alloys that do not wear out for a long time; they are indicated for those who have pathological tooth wear. The products have a long service life.
- Possibility to do without deep preparation. Installation of solid cast structures involves grinding the teeth by only 0.8 mm.
The disadvantages of products of this type are the following qualities:
- lack of aesthetics,
- high thermal conductivity, which can cause discomfort when eating hot food or drinks.
Life time
Cast crowns are made from impressions that were taken from the patient's teeth before grinding. In their production, special technologies are used that make it possible to obtain a strong and extremely durable product that fully matches the shape of the patient’s teeth.
There are no cracks in the structures that bacteria could penetrate. Thanks to the combination of all these facts, the service life of such a crown is at least ten years if it is made with high quality. If you follow the care recommendations, this period can be extended.
Which tooth crown is better: metal or metal-ceramic?
The fundamental difference between these types is the material of the frame shell and the method of installing the microprosthesis. A metal-ceramic prosthesis is made from a cast metal frame, which is repeatedly coated with ceramic mass and fired at a certain temperature in an oven. In the process of installing a crown, the finished frame is first tried on the tooth and adjusted, and then the ceramic shell of the crown is created. The metal-ceramic prosthesis is completely identical to a living tooth, which allows its installation in the smile area.
A little bit of my advertising and let's continue:
I, Sergey Samsakov, an orthopedic dentist with more than
10 years of successful experience
, propose to restore the beauty of the dentition quickly and safely only with metal ceramics or ceramics based on zirconium dioxide or e-max. I highly recommend Cerec technology, which allows you to restore a problematic tooth with a metal-free crown in literally 1-1.5 hours. I do not use pure metal in my work, as I care about the aesthetics of the patient’s dentition.
Stages of manufacturing solid crowns
First of all, the oral cavity is examined and the affected areas are sanitized . The first clinical stage consists of taking an impression of the dentition and the tooth itself using silicone masses. While the permanent product is being manufactured, the patient may be prescribed temporary crowns, which will not only give the smile an aesthetic appearance, but will also help speed up the process of adaptation of the gums to the dentures.
After taking the impression, a wax crown is modeled , in which the wax will subsequently be replaced with metal in a foundry laboratory, and the crown will be processed.
The second stage is to fit the product . The tooth is ground down, and the prosthesis is filled with wax and placed where it will be installed. Excess material comes out through a hole drilled in the back. The crown is removed and sent to the laboratory after smoothing out the irregularities. There it is polished and polished.
After the product is ready, it is fixed in the oral cavity so that the end of the prosthesis is submerged under the gum as little as possible . The tooth should be tightly covered; when the teeth of the antagonists are closed, there should be no unpleasant sensations. It may require some modification, but if all is well, the prosthesis is fixed with permanent rather than temporary cement. Solid crowns take a very long time to produce – the process of creating them can take several weeks.
Installation of this type of crown
Before going to the dentist, you want to know in advance whether the procedure will hurt, how does it happen, how long does it take, how reliable is the result, etc.?
In most cases, the installation procedure is painless, since the crown is installed on a pulpless tooth.
There is also a need to carry out preparation, canal filling, treatment of caries, pulpitis, and strengthening of teeth. And only after this is a solid crown installed.
Depending on the type of this structure and the complexity of the installation, various preparation methods are used: laser, ultrasonic, air-abrasive and tunnel.
The laser device operates silently and is absolutely safe. During processing, the tooth tissues do not heat up, and the possibility of pulp burns, cracks and chips is practically eliminated.
With ultrasonic preparation, the load on the tooth with the working tool is minimal. The procedure is completely painless, does not cause overheating harmful to the pulp, and eliminates the appearance of chips and cracks.
With the air-abrasive drilling method, processing occurs using an air mixture with a special abrasive material in the form of a powder, which is applied to the tooth under pressure. This procedure is painless, the tissues do not overheat, and a minimal amount of hard elements is removed.
The absence of vibration and speed of processing are also important. A one-piece crown is installed after first going through the tunnel preparation stage. Turbine units are used here, the speed of which is controlled and selected by the doctor himself.
The method allows you to minimize the layer of hard tissue removed. But, if the technology is not followed and the doctor is inexperienced, overheating is possible, causing burns to the pulp, chips and cracks, and even damage to the gums.
A one-piece crown is most often used for prosthetics of upper and lower molars and premolars.
Cement is applied to the patient's treated tooth to make an accurate impression. It is from this that the crown will then be made. Special laboratories are engaged in the design and production of these structures.
Then comes the fitting of the crown to make sure that it fits tightly enough and will sit tightly on the tooth. The patient can undergo this procedure a couple of times.
It is temporarily fixed to check the reaction of the tooth, the correctness of the bite, the pain or painlessness of the chewing process, as well as to study an allergic reaction to metal.
Then comes the final stage - fixation of the crown. Do not forget that each patient will require a different approach when choosing a treatment method and installation.
Without the help of an experienced specialist, you will not be able to figure out which type of this design is suitable for you and which is not.

Post-procedure care
Modern one-piece structures can withstand the load of solid food and are resistant to moderate temperature irritants. But in order for crowns to last as long as possible, they require careful care. Don't forget about daily brushing of your teeth and interdental spaces. It is also recommended to use mouth rinses.
For preventive examinations, you should visit your dentist regularly. Diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis often develop unnoticed and eventually cause crown detachment. And only a doctor can detect their first signs and prevent further progression.
You also need to urgently consult a doctor if there is a violation of the integrity of the structure. The dentist will restore or replace it. Lack of treatment can cause the development of a pathological process in the teeth.
